adverts: i hate them
01.29.05 (5:58 pm) [edit]
i have come to totally dislike commercials of all kinds.
especially car adverts sell me a car that doesn't run on gas, but on cheap non-polluting fuel and am sure to sit up and pay attention, until then all your fancy designs with all that horsepower, maintenance, warranty, and interest rates mean nothing to me.
whats up with all those burger ads? we know it's not healthy so stop bloody lying already!!
in this age, all our solutions don't lie in pills. we have pills for bloody everything from anti-depressants to losing-weight-in-weeks pills. insane!! studies have showed that anti-depressants are likely to cause suicidal tendencies in school kids.
now let's take a look at how commercials are designed, those few seconds cost the companies big dollars you know, so all adverts have either catchy-popular tunes or visuals to make sure you don't forget them easily. the short time period that commercials run for, also cause us to further develop a low attention span. and in real life you may find yourself tuning out from one thought to another[ even when you don't want to], without being able to think any one thought through.
anyways, adverts won't get the better of me, am quick to switch channels, for those who also hate commercials, muting the tv volume while adverts are on, make them more tolerable and humourous too, as this way you can fill in your own words. you will also notice other details that you might have never noticed before.
now for the lighter side of things;
listerine ads in trouble
listerine ad, anti-german
be sure to do a search on google for "listerine germans"
thought this post was too long? ask urself why you had trouble reading it through the end without pausing.

encounter with a virus
01.28.05 (4:38 pm) [edit]
encounter on 26th jan 2005
i was real sleepy that morning while checking my email and when an attachment passed the yahoo anti-virus screen, i assumed like a fool it was clean.
turned out it was a "bagle" virus, not the ones you have for breakfast am afraid. my eTrust Antivirus software managed to remove the file. Or so I thought, as some traces were still left i sent a copy of the virus to the anti-virus team at this link and hoped that was the end of it.
encounter on 27th jan 2005
this morning while checking my email, saw that the eTrust Antivirus team had updated their virus signature database, that was quick! They also published a detailed page on the win32 bagle virus, as you can see, this virus shuts down microsoft's firewall program and also the mcafee update program in a way crippling your machine's defenses.
my winpatrol an effective free program prevented the virus from copying itself into the startup programs list. that way the virus wouldn't load everytime i switched on my machine.
my mcafee managed to block the virus from dialling remote host computers on the internet, before it crashed. do i have a backdoor installed on my machine? am not sure.
found that the virus made 323+ copies of itself on my C:/ drive! well i got rid of them now.
encounter today
found 4 copies of the virus, my antivirus program took care of that. don't know when i'll be completely rid of it...

cassini-huygens mission
01.14.05 (8:08 pm) [edit]
today is certainly a historic day for all mankind!
the european designed huygens probe was deployed from the satelite cassini, and has made a successful touchdown on the surface of titan, one of saturn's moons.
discovery science channel is to show live coverage of this event soon.
some mind-blowing facts of this mission:
-- cassini made a slingshot maneuver around venus twice and once around earth to gather enough momentum through gravity to reach saturn.
-- cassini entered saturn's orbit at a speed of 45,000 mph and passed through it's rings at the broadest space between them.
-- brakes were applied in the form of a 96 min burn of it's rockets!!!
-- while cassini remains in orbit around saturn, its probe huygens was deployed to titan, which entered the moon's atmosphere at a speed of 13,000 mph.
-- after entering the atmosphere, it deployed and jettisoned several parachutes for it's 2 and 1/2 hr descent!!!
-- sadly titan's temperatue is around -176 C? F? and so the instruments abroad the probe can only last a few hours, but images and data have been radioed to cassini which is transmitting the data to earth.
a big salute and congratulations to the teams that made this possible.

why do dvds / players have region codes?
01.04.05 (1:12 pm) [edit]
who benefits? the industry.
who has a hard time? us.
was browsing a website selling hongkong cinema flicks with region code 3 and realised that i wouldnt be able to play any of them on my current dvd player at home as the usa falls under region 1.
so did a search to learn more about this absurd region codes for dvds and players. here's a bit from a reliable site.
"According to what the public is being told is that this is a tool to protect copyright and film distribution rights (in other words, movie studio profits). You see, movies are released in theaters in different parts of the world at different times throughout the year. That Summer blockbuster in the U.S. may end up being the Christmas blockbuster overseas. If that occurs, the DVD version of the movie may be out in the U.S. while it is still showing in theaters overseas. In order to preserve the financial integrity of the theatrical distribution of a particular film, it is not possible (under normal conditions) to have a friend in the U.S. send a DVD copy of the film to the country where it is in theatrical release and be able to play the DVD on a player there."
